Hilarious 'Penis Inspection' gag gets Castro...
From the pages of Castro Valley High School’s student newspaper, The Olympian, comes this hilarious headline and news article: “Penis Inspection” Flyers Flood CVHS. Through mundane cutting and pasting, a group of students created and posted the offending flyer in various men’s bathrooms throughout the campus alerting males to this “new” compulsory test for...

Judge grants court oversight of Oakland PD
More problems for the Oakland PD, according to the Bay Citizen. A judge, citing “disbelief” in the slow pace of reforms over how the Oakland PD operates following the 2003 “Riders” case, granted oversight powers to court monitors. A move, the article posits, that is a step away from a federal takeover. “The Court remains in disbelief that Defendants have yet – nine years...

Raiders hire Dennis Allen as head coach
The beginning of the post-Al Davis era in Oakland began Jan. 7 with the hiring of general manager Reggie McKenzie. His first move is to tab Dennis Allen as his first major hire, according to numerous news sources. Allen was the defensive coordinator last season for the division-winning Denver Broncos. He is the first head coach hired by the Raiders with a defensive background since John Madden in...

Stark's statement on President's State of the...
East Bay Rep. Pete Stark issued this statement Tuesday night following President Obama’s State of the Union address: “The President’s address tonight hit on critical issues facing our nation. I wholeheartedly support his call to strengthen the middle class, to make smart infrastructure investments to put America back to work, and to ensure our tax code is fair — not...

CalPERS posted paltry returns last year
Bad news for public employees in the East Bay hoping to negotiate new labor contracts later this year. CalPERS posted just 1.1 percent returns in 2011, according to Bloomberg. The year before, it posted far more robust earnings of 12.5 percent. The $229 billion fund assumes a return of 7.75 percent to meet its obligations. Look for these statistics to be heavily used by pension-busting mayors...

The Fremont City Council whittled down the list of fourteen prospective candidate for appointment to mayor to six, according to Fremont Politics. Former mayor Gus Morrison, Dirk Lorenz and David Bonaccorsi received approval from all four of the remaining councilmembers during a council session last Monday.  Don Driggs, Beth Hoffman and Dan Wilkowsky also received consideration. The group moves...

Lee hopes Obama talks up unemployment during SOTU
Sounds like Rep. Barbara Lee will be taking notes during tonight’s State of the Union address. Blogging at The Hill, the East Bay legislator says she hopes President Obama will address the persistent problem of unemployment. Lee has long been a propopent of extending the unemployment benefits for 99ers—out-of-work Americans who have exhausted their benefits. Don’t count on the...

Sportswriters should stick to writing about sports
Here’s a curious post from CSNBayArea.com regarding the A’s lease with the Coliseum ending next year. Is the City of Oakland playing hardball, the article asks? It also posits Oakland Councilman Ignacio De La Fuente may be bluffing with his recent comments on the stadium issue. De La Fuente told the paper this week that “the A’s have made it absolutely clear the last...

Here's how Joel Young will respond to his latest...
Does Assembly candidate Joel Young need anger management? His latest alleged brush with violence was reported Tuesday by the Oakland Tribune. In the article, Young threatened an aide for Oakland Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan at a bar Jan. 14 in Oakland’s Uptown district. Young later allegedly spat in the aide’s eye before leaving. The paper says a discussion between Jason Overman,...

Reporter overhearing assembly candidate on train...
I’m a little more radical in my reporting style than the average bear, but I also only cover politics where it’s eat or be eaten not only by competing reporters but by the subject itself—politicians and their paid staffers. Yesterday, Bob Salladay of California Watch luckily—for him—overheard a Southern California assembly candidate giving the 4-1-1 on a public...

Ominous comment from labor on Corbett's future
Carla Marinucci’s article on Ro Khanna, the prospective candidate for Rep. Pete Stark’s congressional seat is kind and filled with facts and questions surrounding his run sometime in the future already covered. Near the end of the piece, though, sits a comment that should make state Sen. Ellen Corbett very nervous. Sharon Cornu, one of the most powerful voices within the East Bay...

The latest guy with all the answers for BANG
The Los Angeles Times features BANG’s new boss John Paton. Brace yourself for more empty rhetoric. These people never admit their situation is much more dire than just the changing landscape of journalism (by the way, sooooo 2002, guys). It’s about a dreary, lifeless product, not ridiculous initiatives like writing labs and public outreach (i.e., having readers provide you free...

State Supreme Court to look at pot dispensaries
Local cities like Hayward, Alameda, San Leandro and the unincorporated areas of Alameda County consistently cite a leeriness for moving forward with medical marijuana dispensaries in their towns because of the federal question of Proposition 215. Wanna bet this story eventually proves it was just an excuse to sidestep the issue?
